About this product

Omega-3 Fish Oil 1000 mg Softgels — full description

Omega-3 fish oil 1000 mg softgels provide 180 mg of EPA and 120 mg of DHA per softgel. One a day, 90 softgels, a three-month supply.

What EPA and DHA are

The two long-chain omega-3 fatty acids in fish oil are eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). EPA and DHA contribute to the normal function of the heart — the authorised claim applies at a daily intake of 250 mg of EPA plus DHA, which one softgel supplies. They are incorporated into cell membranes, where they change membrane fluidity, and EPA is the substrate for the resolvin and prostaglandin families that regulate inflammatory signalling.

Why you cannot get them from flaxseed

Plant oils provide ALA, the short-chain omega-3. Converting ALA to EPA runs at a few per cent, and to DHA at well under one per cent in most adults — the enzymes are shared with omega-6 metabolism and are easily outcompeted by a diet high in vegetable oil. Oily fish is the direct source, and fish oil is the concentrate. For a non-fish source of the long-chain forms themselves, see vegan omega-3 algae oil.

Who it suits

Anyone eating oily fish less than twice a week — which is most people. The usual reference point is 250 mg of EPA plus DHA a day for general intake; one softgel here covers 300 mg.

How to take fish oil

One softgel a day with a meal. Fat-soluble nutrients travel the same route, so taking it with food both improves absorption and reduces any aftertaste. Omega-3 oils oxidise — keep the pack closed, cool and out of sunlight, and do not use it past its date. Vitamin E is the antioxidant that protects polyunsaturated fats in membranes, which is why it is the natural companion. If you take anticoagulants, mention fish oil to your doctor before starting.

What is in each softgel

  • Fish oil — 1000 mg, providing 180 mg EPA and 120 mg DHA
  • One softgel a day, with food
  • 90 softgels — a three-month supply

Questions people ask

How much EPA and DHA do I need?

250 mg a day combined is the intake the heart claim is based on. One softgel provides 300 mg.

Will it repeat on me?

Taking it with a meal, or keeping the pack in the fridge, solves it for most people.

Fish or algae oil?

Fish oil is higher in EPA; algae oil is higher in DHA and suitable on a vegan diet. All options are in supplements.

Good to know. Do not exceed the recommended daily dose. Food supplements should not replace a varied, balanced diet and a healthy lifestyle. Talk to your doctor before use if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, taking medication or have a medical condition. Keep out of reach of children. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.
