Maca root 500 mg capsules contain Lepidium meyenii root powder — 1000 mg per two-capsule serving. 90 capsules, 45 days.
What maca is
Maca is a cruciferous root vegetable, a relative of radish and turnip, grown on the Peruvian altiplano above 4000 metres — one of the few food crops that tolerates that altitude, frost and wind. The root has been cultivated and eaten there for centuries, dried and milled, as food rather than as medicine. Its characteristic constituents are the macamides and glucosinolates; unlike a standardised extract, this is whole root powder, which is how maca is traditionally used.
Powder, not extract
Most maca on sale is milled root rather than a concentrated extract, and the dose reflects that: grams, not milligrams. 1000 mg a day in two capsules is a modest, food-like amount. Capsules exist because the powder has a strong, malty, slightly bitter taste that not everyone wants in a drink.
What the law allows us to say
Botanical health claims are on hold in the EU, so no claim is made for maca here. It is a traditional Andean food crop, sold as a food supplement. Caution: maca is a brassica and contains glucosinolates, which can affect iodine uptake in large amounts — if you have a thyroid condition, discuss it with your doctor. It is not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding without medical advice.
How to take maca
Two capsules a day with breakfast. Maca is traditionally taken daily over a period of weeks rather than as a one-off, and some people prefer not to take it late in the day. In the same part of the range, cordyceps capsules are the high-altitude counterpart from the mushroom side, ashwagandha root extract is the other root in the catalogue, and the mushroom powder set is for anyone who would rather take whole-food powders than extracts.
