Ashwagandha root extract 500 mg capsules are standardised to 5% withanolides — 25 mg of the marker compounds per capsule. Root only, no leaf. 60 capsules, a two-month supply.
What ashwagandha is
Withania somnifera is a shrub of the nightshade family, grown in India and the drier parts of South Asia, and one of the central plants of Ayurvedic practice, where the root has been used for centuries. In Western herbal classification it is grouped with the adaptogens. Its characteristic constituents are the withanolides, a family of steroidal lactones concentrated in the root — which is why extracts are standardised to them.
Why root extract and why standardised
Two details separate a serious ashwagandha from a cheap one. The first is the plant part: withanolide content differs between root and leaf, and the traditional and best-studied material is the root. Leaf is cheaper and sometimes added to lift the headline percentage. The second is standardisation — without a declared withanolide percentage, a milligram figure says nothing about what is in the capsule. This extract is root, at 5%.
What the law allows us to say
Health claims for botanicals are still on hold in the EU pending evaluation, so no claim is made for ashwagandha here, and you should be sceptical of any shop that makes one. What we can describe is the plant, the extract and how it is traditionally taken — the rest is for you to read about independently. Do not take ashwagandha during pregnancy or breastfeeding, with thyroid medication, immunosuppressants or sedatives, or if you have an autoimmune or thyroid condition, without medical advice. Rare cases of liver injury have been reported with ashwagandha products; stop and see a doctor if you develop jaundice or persistent abdominal pain.
How to take it
One capsule a day with a meal. Ashwagandha is traditionally taken as a course of several weeks rather than a single dose, and taking it with food reduces the chance of mild stomach upset. In our own range, the mushroom most often used in the same way is reishi, traditionally taken in the evening, while cordyceps is its energy-side counterpart. Maca root is the other botanical in the range.
What is in each capsule
