Iron bisglycinate 14 mg + folic acid tablets combine chelated iron with 200 mcg of folic acid — the two nutrients red blood cell formation depends on. One tablet a day, 90 tablets, a three-month supply.
What iron and folate do in the body
Iron is the atom at the centre of haemoglobin: without it, oxygen has nothing to bind to. Folate is what allows the bone marrow to divide cells fast enough to produce them. Iron contributes to normal oxygen transport in the body, to normal formation of red blood cells and haemoglobin, to normal energy-yielding metabolism, to normal cognitive function, to the normal function of the immune system and to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue. Folate contributes to normal blood formation, to normal homocysteine metabolism, to normal amino acid synthesis and to normal psychological function; it also increases maternal folate status, and low maternal folate status is a risk factor for neural tube defects in the developing foetus.
Why bisglycinate rather than sulphate
Iron sulphate works, but it is also the reason iron supplements have a reputation for nausea, cramp and constipation: unabsorbed free iron irritates the gut wall. Iron bisglycinate is chelated to two glycine molecules, absorbed intact as a complex rather than released as a free ion, so the dose can stay modest — 14 mg, the EU reference intake — while being far better tolerated. It also depends less on stomach acid, which matters for anyone on acid-reducing medication.
Who it is for
Women of reproductive age, anyone on a vegetarian or vegan diet (plant iron is non-haem and poorly absorbed), endurance athletes, blood donors, and anyone planning a pregnancy — for the folic acid. It is a maintenance dose. Diagnosed iron-deficiency anaemia needs a therapeutic dose and medical follow-up, not a supplement chosen by guesswork: iron is one of the few nutrients where too much is a real problem, so test before you treat.
How to take iron bisglycinate
One tablet a day with water, ideally with a source of vitamin C — ascorbic acid reduces iron to the form the gut absorbs more readily, and vitamin C 500 mg taken at the same time is the simplest way to do it. Avoid tea, coffee and cocoa for an hour either side: polyphenols bind iron. Keep calcium and zinc at the other end of the day, since they compete for the same transporter.
What is in each tablet
- Iron (as iron bisglycinate) — 14 mg, 100% NRV
- Folic acid — 200 mcg, 100% NRV
- One tablet a day, with vitamin C, away from tea and coffee
- 90 tablets — a three-month supply
Questions people ask
Will it upset my stomach?
Bisglycinate is the form least likely to. Taking it with a small meal rather than on an empty stomach removes the problem for most people.
Can I take it with a multivitamin?
Multivitamin for women already contains iron — add the totals before combining, and do not stack iron without reason.
Why is folic acid included?
Iron and folate are both required to build red blood cells, and a shortfall in either produces the same tiredness. See all minerals.
