Vegan omega-3 algae oil softgels provide 250 mg of DHA and 125 mg of EPA from Schizochytrium microalgae — no fish involved. One softgel a day, 60 softgels, a two-month supply.
Omega-3 straight from the source
Fish do not synthesise EPA and DHA; they accumulate them by eating microalgae. Culturing the algae directly skips the fish entirely, which removes the two usual objections to fish oil: the taste and the question of marine contaminants that concentrate up the food chain. The fatty acids are identical molecules — the same DHA, just one step earlier in the chain.
What DHA does
DHA contributes to the maintenance of normal brain function and to the maintenance of normal vision, at a daily intake of 250 mg — exactly what one softgel provides. It is structural: DHA makes up a large share of the fatty acids in neuronal membranes and in the photoreceptor membranes of the retina. Together, DHA and EPA contribute to the normal function of the heart.
Who it is for
Vegans and vegetarians first — this is the only practical way to get preformed DHA on a plant-based diet, since conversion from the ALA in flax, chia and walnuts is inefficient. Also anyone who cannot tolerate fish oil, and anyone who would rather avoid fish for sustainability reasons. Pregnancy and breastfeeding raise DHA requirements, though the dose should be discussed with a midwife or doctor.
How to take it
One softgel a day with a meal — omega-3 fatty acids are absorbed with dietary fat. The softgel shell is vegan. Store it cool and away from light: long-chain omega-3 oils oxidise, which is also why this pack is two months rather than six. Vitamin E is the antioxidant that protects these fats once they are in your membranes, and vitamin B12 is the other nutrient a plant-based diet needs by default.
What is in each softgel
- Algal oil (Schizochytrium sp.) — 250 mg DHA, 125 mg EPA
- Vegan softgel, one a day with food
- 60 softgels — a two-month supply
Questions people ask
Is algae omega-3 as good as fish oil?
The molecules are the same. Algae oil is typically higher in DHA, fish oil higher in EPA.
Can I get enough from flaxseed instead?
No — flax provides ALA, and conversion to DHA is under one per cent in most adults.
Is it suitable during pregnancy?
DHA requirements rise, but check the dose with your doctor. See all supplements.
Good to know. Do not exceed the recommended daily dose. Food supplements should not replace a varied, balanced diet and a healthy lifestyle. Talk to your doctor before use if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, taking medication or have a medical condition. Keep out of reach of children. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.
