Cordyceps militaris double extract is a liquid extract of Cordyceps militaris fruiting bodies, made with hot water and then alcohol; the alcohol is removed afterwards, so the finished extract contains none. A 30 ml glass bottle with a pipette holds 30 servings of about 1 ml, so it lasts a month.
Cordyceps militaris, not the caterpillar fungus
The cordyceps of Tibetan folklore, Ophiocordyceps sinensis, grows out of buried caterpillars and is rare and costly. Cordyceps militaris is its close relative that can be grown on a nutrient substrate. It is traditionally used in Chinese practice, and it is the species known for cordycepin. In the EU no health claims are authorised for cordyceps, so we make none — what follows is about the mushroom and how this extract is made.
Cordycepin and adenosine
Cordycepin (3′-deoxyadenosine) is a nucleoside, a molecule that differs from adenosine by a single oxygen atom. Adenosine itself is also present in the fruiting body. Both are small, fairly polar molecules, and both dissolve readily in a warm alcohol and water mix, which is why the alcohol step is the one that matters most for this mushroom. Cordycepin accumulates in the fruiting body, not in grain-grown mycelium.
Where the two extractions fit
Hot water draws out the polysaccharides, including beta-glucans. Alcohol takes up the nucleosides and other smaller compounds, and is then removed. The two liquids are combined, so the finished extract carries both groups. Alcohol is only the extraction solvent: it is removed during production and is not part of the finished product. The raw material is fruiting bodies grown on our own farm.
How to take it
Add 1 ml (about 30 drops, one pipette) to 100–150 ml of water or juice, or hold it under the tongue for 30 seconds. Cordyceps is traditionally taken in the morning, 20–30 minutes before a meal; we would keep it away from late evening. Lion’s mane is the usual morning partner and reishi the evening one. Capsule version: cordyceps capsules. All four tinctures are in the double extract set, and the full range is under mushrooms.
Keep the bottle in the refrigerator, below 10 °C, and use it within 30 days of opening. Avoid it in pregnancy and breastfeeding, and do not give it to children. Ask your doctor first if you take immunosuppressants, anticoagulants or diabetes medication, if you have an autoimmune condition or high blood pressure, or before surgery.
What is in each bottle
- Cordyceps militaris fruiting-body double extract — extracted with water and alcohol, the alcohol removed during production
- About 1 ml (30 drops) a day, in the morning
- 30 ml — 30 servings, a one-month supply
Questions people ask
Is it like coffee?
No. It contains no caffeine, and we do not describe it as a stimulant.
Can I take it in the evening?
You can, but tradition puts it in the morning, and we recommend keeping it away from late evening.
Why not simply buy the powder?
Powder has no alcohol step. The extract is concentrated, needs no brewing, and reaches compounds that plain water leaves behind.
Good to know. Do not exceed the recommended daily dose. Food supplements should not replace a varied, balanced diet and a healthy lifestyle. Talk to your doctor before use if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, taking medication or have a medical condition. Keep out of reach of children. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.
