Turkey Tail double extract is a liquid extract of Trametes versicolor fruiting bodies, made with hot water and then alcohol; the alcohol is removed afterwards, so the finished extract contains none. A 30 ml bottle holds 30 servings of 1 ml (about 30 drops), so one bottle lasts a month.
The mushroom with the stripes
Trametes versicolor grows in overlapping fans on dead hardwood, banded in brown, grey and cream like a turkey’s tail, which gives it its common name. It is common across European woods, but tough and leathery rather than edible, so it is taken as an extract or tea, as it traditionally has been in Chinese practice. No health claims are authorised for turkey tail in the EU, and we make none. What follows is chemistry and production.
PSK and PSP: the water-soluble story
Turkey tail is known for two protein-bound polysaccharides: PSK, characterised in Japan, and PSP, characterised in China. Both are built on a beta-glucan backbone with a protein fraction attached, which is why they are called polysaccharopeptides. They are large molecules that dissolve in hot water, so this is the part of the mushroom that the water step in the double extract is there for. Amounts vary between strains and batches, and we do not publish a PSK or PSP figure for this bottle.
What the alcohol step adds
Water extraction does not reach everything. Turkey tail also contains phenolic compounds and small lipophilic molecules, and those dissolve in alcohol. The alcohol fraction is combined with the water fraction, so the finished liquid carries both groups. Since most of the interest in turkey tail lies in the water-soluble polysaccharides, a plain hot-water decoction is a fair product too; the double extract simply covers more ground.
How to take it
Unlike lion’s mane in the morning or reishi in the evening, turkey tail has no set time of day. Add 1 ml to 100–150 ml of water or tea and drink it with a meal. It sits naturally beside chaga double extract. The capsule version is turkey tail capsules, and all four tinctures come together in the double extract set. See the whole range under mushrooms.
Keep the bottle in the refrigerator after opening and use it within 30 days. The alcohol used in extraction is removed during production, so the extract is alcohol-free. Do not take it during pregnancy or breastfeeding, and do not give it to children. If you take immunosuppressants, are being treated for any serious illness, have an autoimmune condition or have surgery planned, talk to your doctor before starting.
What is in each bottle
- Trametes versicolor fruiting-body double extract — extracted with water and alcohol, the alcohol removed during production
- 1 ml (about 30 drops) a day, with a meal
- 30 ml — 30 servings, a one-month supply
Questions people ask
What are PSK and PSP?
Polysaccharides bound to protein, characteristic of turkey tail. They dissolve in hot water and are the main reason the species is studied.
How long is a course?
One bottle is 30 days. Turkey tail is traditionally taken in courses of one to three months.
Can I combine it with other mushrooms?
Yes, there is no known conflict. Chaga and reishi are the usual companions.
Good to know. Do not exceed the recommended daily dose. Food supplements should not replace a varied, balanced diet and a healthy lifestyle. Talk to your doctor before use if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, taking medication or have a medical condition. Keep out of reach of children. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.
