Reishi double extract is a liquid extract of Ganoderma lucidum fruiting bodies, made with hot water and then alcohol; the alcohol is removed afterwards, so the finished extract contains none. A 30 ml bottle holds 30 servings of 1 ml (about 30 drops), taken in the evening, so one bottle lasts a month.
Reishi and the line we do not cross
Ganoderma lucidum is a glossy, lacquered bracket mushroom, red-brown and woody, called lingzhi in China and reishi in Japan. It has been part of Chinese tradition for over two thousand years. Because health claims for fungi are not authorised in the EU, we say nothing about what reishi does in your body. We describe the mushroom, what is in it and how the extract is made.
Triterpenes, and why only alcohol reaches them
Reishi’s bitterness comes from triterpenes, chiefly the ganoderic acids. They are lipophilic, closer to a fat than to a sugar, so they barely dissolve in water however long you simmer. Alcohol takes them up easily. Hot water does the opposite job: it extracts the beta-glucans, the long polysaccharide chains of the cell wall. A decoction therefore gives you the second group and very little of the first. The double extract combines both, which is the reason for making it this way.
Why fruiting bodies
Triterpenes concentrate in the fruiting body; mycelium grown on grain holds a good deal of leftover starch instead. We grow reishi on our own farm, dry the fruiting bodies and extract only those.
How to take it
Add 1 ml to 100–150 ml of water, tea or juice and drink it in the evening, one to two hours before bed, or hold it under the tongue for 30 seconds. Evening is the traditional slot for reishi, just as lion’s mane belongs to the morning — a convention, not a promise about sleep. If you prefer capsules, see reishi capsules; for another plant often taken in the evening, see ashwagandha. All four tinctures are in the double extract set, and the rest of the range is under mushrooms.
Do not take reishi in pregnancy or while breastfeeding, and do not give it to children. Reishi may affect clotting, so ask your doctor first if you take warfarin or other anticoagulants, antihypertensives or immunosuppressants, and stop before planned surgery as advised. Keep the bottle in the refrigerator after opening and use it within 30 days.
What is in each bottle
- Ganoderma lucidum fruiting-body double extract — extracted with water and alcohol, the alcohol removed during production
- 1 ml (about 30 drops) a day, in the evening
- 30 ml — 30 servings, a one-month supply
Questions people ask
Why does it taste so bitter?
That is the ganoderic acids. It is a sign that real fruiting body has gone in.
Is the extract better than powder?
Powder gives you mostly the water-soluble part. The alcohol step reaches the triterpenes, which water does not, so the extract covers more of the mushroom.
Can I combine it with other mushrooms?
Yes. The usual pattern is lion’s mane or cordyceps in the morning and reishi in the evening.
Good to know. Do not exceed the recommended daily dose. Food supplements should not replace a varied, balanced diet and a healthy lifestyle. Talk to your doctor before use if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, taking medication or have a medical condition. Keep out of reach of children. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.
