About this product

Sodium Citrate 200 mg — 90 Tablets — full description

Sodium citrate 200 mg tablets provide 200 mg of sodium citrate, which supplies roughly 50 mg of sodium. One tablet a day, 90 tablets, a three-month supply.

What the law allows us to say

No health claims for sodium are authorised in the EU, so none is made here. What we can do is describe what the mineral is. Sodium is the main positively charged ion outside the cells; together with potassium it sets the electrical gradient across every cell membrane, which nerves and muscles rely on, and it helps regulate the amount of water the body holds.

Why sodium citrate

Citrate is the salt of citric acid, the acid in citrus fruit. In the body it is converted to bicarbonate, which makes sodium citrate an alkalising form of sodium: it acts as a buffer, helping to keep blood pH within its narrow range. That is why it is used in sports nutrition as a buffering agent.

Who might use it

This is a niche product, and it should be said plainly: most people already eat too much sodium, not too little. The World Health Organization recommends less than 2 g of sodium a day, and 200 mg of sodium citrate (about 50 mg of sodium) is around 2.5% of that limit. A tablet is relevant mainly for people who sweat heavily over long sessions and want to replace some of the sodium they lose, and for athletes who like to use a buffer around training.

How to take sodium citrate 200 mg

One tablet a day with a meal and plenty of water. Count it towards your daily total: if you already use a lot of salt or eat many processed foods, you probably do not need it. If you are on a salt-restricted diet, have high blood pressure or kidney disease, or take lithium or diuretics, talk to your doctor before use.

Sodium works alongside potassium and magnesium citrate in the body’s electrolyte balance. For sport, citrulline malate is the usual companion to a buffer, and the full list of minerals is in minerals.

What is in each tablet

  • Sodium citrate — 200 mg (about 50 mg sodium); no EU reference value is set for sodium
  • One tablet a day, with a meal
  • 90 tablets — a three-month supply

Questions people ask

Is sodium citrate the same as table salt?

No. Table salt is sodium chloride. Sodium citrate is the sodium salt of citric acid and has an alkalising rather than a salty character.

Will it raise my blood pressure?

The amount of sodium in one tablet is small, but any added sodium counts. If your blood pressure is high or you have been told to limit salt, ask your doctor first.

Can I use it with potassium?

Yes, the two work as a pair in the body. If you are building a sports routine, beta-alanine is another buffering ingredient in the range.

Good to know. Do not exceed the recommended daily dose. Food supplements should not replace a varied, balanced diet and a healthy lifestyle. Talk to your doctor before use if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, taking medication or have a medical condition. Keep out of reach of children. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.
